You Choose What

Welcome to You Choose What! Where you choose what I should edit next (pretty obvious). In order to play, you must know how the game works (doy):

There are 4 choices and you must choose only 1. The choices are 3 animator breakdowns (the 3 cartoons will be said soon) or an animator reel (the animator will be of my choice).

The breakdown cartoons are:

Scrap Happy Daffy (‘43)

Hare Ribbin’ (‘44)

Señor Droopy (‘49)

If you’d like an animator breakdown from me, you must choose 1 of the above. If you don’t want this, you can vote for an animator reel (which once again, will be of my choice).

In order to vote you can vote with this Twitter poll. If you don’t have Twitter, you can vote by commenting on this blog post.

**VOTING ENDS IN 5 DAYS AS OF MARCH 27**

Clampett Animating... On His Own Cartoon?

I remember watching Porky’s Badtime Story a few months ago and seeing a style that was shockingly similar to something of a Bob Clampett animation—of course, it turned out it was in fact Clampett’s work. It’s so interesting to see Bob Clampett animate on his own cartoon, considering he doesn’t do anything from Get Rich Quick Porky (his second cartoon) and onward as an animator.

The most likely reason he animates on this cartoon is probably because some of the animation was finished under Ub Iwerks’ direction before he left. Clampett animated on the two Iwerks directed shorts from before, so it’s probably the most likely reason.

Clampett’s credited on both!

Of course, there’s a switch near the end of Clampett’s sequence, where it switches to Bill Hammer’s animation. Or at least I think it’s Bill’s work (Bill Hammer comparison below).

The animation for the original sequence is just as great as the remake’s animation (by Phil Monroe and Virgil Ross, both animator’s parts shown below and compared to the original scene).

A “Warm” Cup of Coffee

If I had to choose one Hanna-Barbera animator as my favorite, it would probably be George Nicholas (sorry, Lah!). Despite the budget being far too low, George would always bring out the most energy in his scenes (again, sorry, Lah).

One of the best examples I could find is from Lullabye Bye Bear, a Yogi Bear cartoon animated solely by Nicholas. The impact is what makes this little bit of animation so great to me.

So far, the animation’s pretty tame. Yogi opens his mouth (in a very odd fashion) to drink what he thinks is warm coffee.

Something appears to be coming out from the pot. It seems like something solid!

WHAM! The frozen coffee falls out of the pot and crashes into Yogi’s face. Really funny drawing

The smears here are just as great. It helps show the power of the impact from the frozen coffee.

And finally, the result.

For those of you curious, here’s the scene in motion:

This is definitely one of my favorite scenes by George. Such energy, such timing, it’s an overall great scene.
